Our Review

Exclusive to RBS current account holders only, the Classic Credit Card is perfect for everyday use. With 13 months interest free on all purchases and 13 months at 0% p.a. on balance transfers, a comprehensive rewards scheme and no annual fee, the Classic account is a great all rounder.

Who it’s for

The Classic account is designed as an every day credit card. Thanks to its low introductory fees and varied reward scheme, the RBS Classic card is ideal for anyone who loves to shop and get rewarded for spending.

Eligibility

The RBS Classic credit card is only available to existing RBS customers. On top of this you must be earning £10,000 or more per annum, and like all credit cards, you must be over the age of 18.

Balance transfers

RBS offer an impressive 13 months interest free period on all balance transfers. Once this introductory period is up, the interest rate reverts to 17.95% p.a.. It should be noted that you can only take advantage of the introductory fees if you transfer within the first 3 months and that transfers are also subject to a 2.9% handling fee, which is fairly standard across the industry.

Purchases

The Classic credit card comes with a 0% p.a. interest rate on all purchases for the first 13 months. After this period, the Classic account boasts a 56 day interest free period – perfect if you can afford to pay off your balance in full at the end of each month. Otherwise RBS charge 17.95% p.a..

Rewards

RBS offer a fantastic range of rewards and benefits for Classic credit card holders including the RBS Travel Service for discounts on holiday bookings and other travel necessities including insurance. RBS also offer shopping discounts from computer products (10% off HP products) to car hire (10% off at Hertz). As a Classic credit card holder you will also get access to the MasterCard reward scheme.

Cash advances

You can use the Classic credit card to get up to £300 each day (depending on your credit limit) from ATM’s worldwide. Just be prepared for the 3% handling fee and 27.95% p.a. interest rate.

Security & fraud protection

RBS have teamed up with MasterCard to offer all Classic credit card holders the opportunity to sign up to SecureCode for an extra level of security on all your online transactions, protecting you against fraudulent activity. RBS also actively monitor all accounts and will send out a text message if they notice any suspicious activity.

There is also the option to upgrade to RBS’s card protection scheme that gives you additional cover and protection. This service is £36.99 per annum and is excellent value for money.

Conclusion

The RBS Classic credit card is a relatively cheap way to pay for everyday items on credit. Unfortunately, this card doesn’t excel in one particular area. If you’re after a reward card then there are better options on the market and, similarly, if you’re after a low rate card then you may be disappointed. However, if you are looking to build up a credit history and want the flexibility that comes with owning a credit card then the RBS Classic account could be the one for you.
