I had seen adverts for the Capital One Master card everywhere. Deciding on applying for one was easy, as it would only be used in an emergency! I applied and opted for the payment protection plan as well. Interest is 2.248% a month, so it is a nice little earner for the Bank. My limit started at £200, but it has been steadily rising since then. I did not have any CCJ's when I applied.
5% of the balance has to be paid off every month, and on £900 that is £45. If a payment is late, £20 is charged to your account. The payment was not received on time; so it was late, as the statements did not arrive three times. I had been charged the £20, but a call to the head office had the charge knocked off.
My card looks good, as mine is a Tiger card, and the services offered by Capital One are unbeatable. As well as having an online banking facility at www.capitalone.co.uk where you can pay your monthly statement, transfer balances and check your transactions, there is also a free phone automated service where you can do exactly the same. Most of the other providers who let you check your transactions over the phone will charge you at the national rate for this very 'privilege'. From this 0800 952 2244; free phone number you can also get through to a 'human' advisor without charge for account enquires. A lost or stolen card is reported to 0800 952 5267. The staff at Capital One are, I have found, very helpful young people, and they will do anything they can to keep you sweet.
If you have to make a payment over the counter a £5 charge is levied, as well as a giant wait in the queue. It also has to be paid into HSBC bank, as no one else will take the money. Cash advance is at present £2.50, but it is going up to £3 in August or 3%. The card can be used abroad at 22 million locations, so it is very handy for the traveller. A 4 number pin means no signing for goods any more, which I also find convenient.
This card is recommended as a convenient way into the world of the credit card, with low monthly charges, and helpful staff only a phone call away.

I screwed up, plain and simple. I didn't pay and then I ducked them for along time. Then I get this letter in the mail. It was an offer so good, I couldn't beleive it. I had an attorney at a collection agency check it out. Here was the offer:
Pay off the current balance at 0% apr. Once the balance was paid off, I get a new credit limit equal to 50% of the previous balance.
I leaped on this offer. Paid the balance off in 8 months and got my shiny new card. Yes, the limit is still low after 2 years, but who can blame them. I use the card responsibly now. If they raise the limnit great, if not, who cares. They worked with me instead of sueing me and puting me into collections.
Capitol one will always have my buiness. But they won't be making much interest off of me.
I got the card in March 2006 to pay off an October 2006 holiday. Dividing the £2,000 debt with 10 months interest free credit was going to be a simple and easy payment of £200 per month by direct debit, or so I thought. The following month a £20 late payment fee was added to the account. It seems Capital One only accept direct debits for paying minimum or full balance, which no one bothered to tell me when I set up the account. A standing order was then set up, only to receive another letter one month later from Capital One requesting payment. A second standing order was set up, only to get another letter in June requesting payment, and advice that a late payment fee had been added to the account. Checks with my bank proved 5 payments had been sent to Capital One. It took 23 telephone calls - the majority taking 20 minutes in length (when you work full time, often getting home late, it's a tall order to get things sorted). Initially, the customer service people spoken to about the account couldn't speak English very well - never mind understand my complaint, and they didn't think Capital One were capable of making a mistake. I was at screaming point trying to explain, so I gave up!
After saying that I wanted to speak to a manager about a complaint, I managed to get the name and direct telephone number of someone in the remit department, who advised me to get my bank to complete a BACs check on my payments. At first he declined contact with my bank (even with my permission), but was willing to accept fax notification of my deposits from them. My bank managed to find out that my 5 payments had been made into another Mrs Whittaker account with Capital One, who had a similar bank account number to mine! Capital One wrote to her for permission to take my 5 payments from her account and place them into mine! Guess what? She didn't reply. She had run her account up to the limit and must have thought it was Christmas!! 3 weeks later the £1,000 still hadn't been added to my account, and it was back to the old grind stone of making contact with the remit department. It only took six telephone calls (approximately 45 minutes duration) on this occasion! He hadn't done anything with the information I had provided him with, and he was at a loss as to why it hadn't been sorted out. I have no idea who he intended to sort the problem out with, especially since he was the one in full possession of the facts.
One week later he gave a verbal undertaking that he would sort this matter out - just as I received a letter from a customer relations manager at Capital One asking me to ring her to discuss why no payments had been made into my account. Guess what? I didn't ring her! I'd still be on the telephone now trying to get through. Needless to say, I have written a letter of complaint (only two days ago) and I will keep you updated with the result!!!
I've had my Capital One credit card for a good few years, and in that time I've managed to get my credit back on track.
Firstly, I took the card because of bad credit in the past. I was never great with payment dates etc. Capital One however helped me with this.
The charges for missing payments or going over the limit were sky high. After a few discrepancies, I realised that I needed to make sure I sorted it out, and paid on time all the time, or I'd be up to £45 out of pocket in a month.
I now pay all my credit cards on time, and it's all thanks to Capital One.
The one thing is "it takes credit to build credit"
I like it that Capital One charges high sky fees for missing a payment or going over the limit. It isn't good actually for a cardholder but on the other hand he learnes to display discipline, thus omproving his credit rating in a relatively short time.
