hi there,

i'm a first time poster and first time house buyer... I'm trying to find reasonable buildings and contents insurance but the online options tend to assume no claims - i don't have one because this is my first house, not because i'm in the habit of accidentally burning them down... but this doesn't come across in the quotes... Does anyone have any advice? I'm a mature student with more debt than money, so every penny counts!

Hope someone can help,

thanks!!

I have just organised insurance for my daughter, also a FTB. I went through Quidco (for cashback) & put the buildings cover with Zurich, & the contents with Barclays. (2 separate policies = 2 lots of cashback!)

thanks for your help - i'd never heard of quidco before but the site looks great! Have you used it successfully then? I'm obviously on a steep learning curve here! Barclays weren't keen to insure a student FTB but the quote from Zurich looks good (if i can just get their website to recognise my house and not the one nextdoor from the postcode!)

Thanks so much... fingers crossed for Zurich....

Am in same FTB situation and after a great deal of shopping around have found that the best quote for me was with Zurich, at approx. £240 a year or £22 a month if paid by direct debit for combined contents and buildings. This is for a new house at £150k with £40k of contents cover, including the additional accidental damage option. Some quotes have come back at 2 or even 3 times this amount per month! I've found a particular problem as the buyer of a brand new house is that many websites have been unable to give me a quote on this address, but Zurich seem to have come up trumps...

It appears that there's been a leak in my bathroom somewhere which has caused some water damage to the ceiling in the room below. The tiles on the bathroom floor have also craked and I suspect this may be to do with the water swelling up the plywood underneath.

I have Buildings and Contents both with Zurich insurance. The contents includes accidental damage but the buildings doesn't.

Will the insurance cover me for the repair of this damage?

I think its best you call and ask your Zurich. My neighbour got a crack in her shower tray which went un-noticed until the water made a mark on the downstairs ceiling. She wasn't covered for anything as its classed as wear and tear.

We had some damage to our house in a storm over new year, I made a claim, firstly they said that the claim was refused because there had been no storms, then when we proved them wrong, they said that they were refusing the claim because the cost of the repair was less than the excess -which is £50 - we asked them for the name of a builder who would come and repair the damage including scaffolding for less than £50 - they couldnt!!!!!! Our builder has quoted £380 !!!

Now they have agreed to repair the problems , using their own contractor - 2 months after the initial claim - today I received a letter from a limited company firm of builders asking me to send them £50 and saying that they will come and do the repair in approx 4 weeks - checked out the company with companies house and they are 12 months late in filing their annual return - doesnt inspire much confidence or tempt me to part with £50 to them!!!! Rung Zurich who just are not interested its a case of send them the £50 excess or go away!!! I have been with them for 15 years and this is my first claim!
