'Money Sickness Syndrome' affects two in five

More than two UK residents in five have experienced 'Money Sickness Syndrome' - where concerns over finances cause stress affecting the rest of your life.

The physical symptoms of Money Sickness Syndrome can include palpitations, shortness of breath and headaches, a ?tight? feeling in the stomach, nausea and diarrhoea, indigestion, a lack of appetite and poor sleep.

Psychological symptoms of the conditions include irritability and mood swings, general nervousness, poor concentration and forgetfulness, poor judgement and decision-making, and negative thoughts.

And these problems have seen almost four million UK residents take time off work, with another 11 million Britons experiencing a slump in their sex lives as a result of money worries, research from Axa shows.

"Money worries can cause significant problems in relationships, and people who suffer as a result are often in worse health than those who are in control of their finances," said GP and leading mental health expert, Dr Roger Henderson, who identified the condition.

Dr Henderson argues in a report published today that people at all income levels experience Money Sickness Syndrome but its effects differ.

The day-to-day pressure of making ends meet is the foremost concern for some, while others worry over the longer-term pressure of amassing the very large sums of money needed for an extended jobless stretch or retirement.

Dr Henderson concluded: "A quarter of people in debt are receiving treatment for stress, depression and anxiety from their GP. Based on what I see in my surgery every day, I believe a financial education programme can only have beneficial results when allied to sound independent financial advice."

My husband and I went in with 2 other guys to open a business back in 1980, We had to put out a lot of money, loan one of the guys money, etc. That guy turned out to be a crook and we were stuck with all of our money in a failing business.

My husband took over the work and worked 20 hours or more a day while I got a job elsewhere. It took us two years of working like that to just break even and we sold out. The worst two years and the most stressful of my life.
Now I have money in the bank and don't worry that much about it. I will never get in that position again!! (I hope)

Count me as a victim of that syndrome!! - I had it BAD back in 2003...my parents were not receiving any income, my sis and I had to support them, we barely were making ends meet and then I got fired!!!....I'm also getting it lately, as I see the credit card bills and think about the farm money lasting only through Feb of this year and, no matter what I do, my salary will NOT be enough to pay for this bills and for Ale's school... this has been partly solved by the english lessons, and that would cover the money side of it, but now I'm stressing about my hours away from my daughter and, about whether or not I will be able to "keep up" with 2 jobs!...some days, I feel like I'm worrying myself into a heart attack

my worst time ever was when regan was president. he passed a law on baq's which made all court orders go to original order and made it retroactive 2 years. i did not recieve for 2 years, only 1 1/2 exactly when it went thru, but they counted 2 years of his current rate which raised the same month that i had not even ever recieved. my orignal order was 250. for one year thats all i recieved, for six months i got 312.50. the law passed and marks baq went to 512.50. they counted that amount against me for 2 years. i worked 60+ hrs a week to sign a check over to a bill. detroit ed one week consumer power the next, landowner the next, gm the next after that. i even went to welfare to get some relief, cause i didnt use that stuff, i never wanted too and they didnt let me either. they said wether i got the money or not the money was paid and therefore counted as i recieved it. i lived on commodities with jake for 2 years. i cleaned my moms house on the weekend just to be able to buy his extra juice he needed. i wasnt even eligable for the commodities, but my dads friends were a last stop couple for foster care and they recieved them and couldnt use them. if it had not been for them we would prolly have starved to death. my son has one sinus, its only size of a dime and at preteen should be the size of a quarter, he was to drink as much juice as he could, he drank so much he got where his teeth and gums seperated! but he would get headaches so bad, he couldnt hold up his head and hed vomit after 2 or 3 days. thought he was peeing the bed but it was bacterial leakage cause his sinuses holding in all that fluid became stagnant, which caused the headaches and vomiting and what appeared to be peeing the bed. he got antibiotics every 2 months and was told drink juice if you drink anything! After 2 years of this, i called jag and the congressman, david bonior at that time in my district, and they both jumped on this matter and shut down sanilac county friend of the court while they investigated them. fired all but the fotc hisself and found a suitable candidate to run against him in the next campaign. what they did to me was illegal! it was immoral! and when he called me in reguard s to a letter i wrote in requesting a change of fotc offices which as a brat im entitled to do, he called my neighbor and my neighbor listened in and heard him threaten me that if i tried it he could make sure i went another 2 years w/o. a deposition was taken on my neighbor too. they also sent mark the money and he spent it like he was entitled! so the military took everything he owned and his money in the bank and that was a burden too, as he missused it he was no longer entitled to apply for it, so now no baq funds for me, they never forced him to get the champus til this point which was redundant. now im still owed over 50,000 dollars and will never see a dime. my mom asked a lawyer, and the lawyer informed jake if he ever wants too he can sue his dad for the money. we suffered! jake remembers it too. he wont even call his dad dad, he calls him mark. thats his choice and i never put any influence on it in any way. it was so bad, and everyone knew it was that bad, that when the schools, romeo mich, redid thier flooring they added to the dress code that they had to wear clear soles or buster browns to school, i called him itching at him saying this is a public school and if you send my son home cause i cant buy clear soled shoes, i will sue you! he told me to relax that he already thought of me and asked the local office of national womens org to buy a pair, they gave the princepal a blank check to get jake a pair of shoes. he picked jake up and took him to kmart, they had a meal in the snack bar and bought a pair of shoes. jake remembers that day the most, and he wiped his shoes off everyday when he got them, he was so proud. he cried when he outgrew them. i owe thanks to congressman bonior and jim bowling inspector general of tae kom div of jag. they helped me when i needed it most. one of them if not both also called the lions and knights org and got us a food basket. ill never forget what they did for us, God Bless them!

Now that must be the reason for my migrain diagnosis, fighting with my husband over which bills to pay every payday, not answering the telephone(thank god for caller ID) because the bill collectors call like 20 times a day and just wishing I would shrivel up and blow away. Im glad this site is here because I have gotten some good advice from it.
