Halifax Home Insurance

About Halifax
Halifax was based in the town of Halifax and set up as a solution to provide working men a means to club together to buy land and build themselves houses. In December 1852 the Halifax Permanent Benefit Building Society was formally established. Over a century later the advent of computerisation heralded an era of rapid change and innovation. The business of the Halifax was transformed - accounts were handled electronically and filing systems automated. In 1987 new legislation allowed building societies to increase their range of financial services and Halifax steadily diversified into personal banking, stock broking, insurance and estate agency. In its more recent history Halifax first merged with the Leeds Permanent Building Society before acquiring Clerical Medical. It then converted from Society status to PLC status. The latest chapter in its history is its merger with Bank of Scotland to for HBOS.

Halifax Home Insurance
Halifax home insurance comes from one of the UK's most respected names, and premiums are reasonable. However, we encountered a glitch in the site: the premium quoted for our urban couple was for buildings insurance instead of contents insurance.
  • Home insurance

  • Buildings insurance

  • Contents insurance

  • Accidental damage insurance

  • Legal insurance
Halifax home insurance offers the usual range of policies and the usual disclaimers: if you use your home for any business purpose you won't be able to apply online.

The quotation process is exceptionally fast and produced a reasonable premium of £304.78 for our suburban family, but we encountered problems getting a quote for our urban couple: the premium was for buildings, not contents insurance, and we couldn't find a way of persuading Halifax to give us a quote for contents-only insurance.

If you can persuade the Halifax home insurance site to give you a quote, premiums are based on a standard £50 excess; you can increase this amount to cut the cost of your premium.

Summary
When you are shopping for home insurance take a look at the rates offered by the Halifax. Getting a quote is easy: to make the process as quick as possible, Halifax has set out a list of conditions which you should read through before you start your quotation. If you agree with the conditions you can proceed. Simply fill in the web form with details concerning your requirements including details about the property to be insured as well as how many people are living there. If you are a member of a neighbourhood watch scheme or have fitted extra security measures, you may be eligible for a discount. Halifax will then provide you with an instant quote in less than a minute. If you are still comparing companies you can save this quote for up to seven days.

The Halifax site is easy to use and provides plenty of information. There is a summary of cover which you read through and if you are confused by any of the information on the site you can call 0800 032 1752 to speak to an advisor.

Received a quotation over the phone, which Halifax followed up by post. This was wrong so phoned up and was told they were unable to change my quote unless I gave my bank details and took the policy out, then they could change it and then I could cancel!??? Forget it, why would I want to go to all that hassle, all I wanted was a correct quote.

Anyway when the time of my completion date came I rang back and said I will take the policy out but will you change this one thing. Oh they said I'll have to put you through to another dept who said it must be authorised and it takes 24 hours.

Do you want to know what I wanted changing??? Is it something really crucial??? NO - it was to say that I was out in the day not in like they had put!!! I ask you. I must have spoken to 5 different people one of them put the phone down on me. I mean do they think we have nothing better to do than ring them up?

for the last 13 months have been with the halifax for home insurance. Before i was with budget and various others over the years.
Halifax consistently has given me the lowest quote around..

Their cover is unlimited and all accidental damage included .As i live at the moment , within the M25 boundary.... insurance can be higher, especially where i live.( thanks kids grrrrrrrr ).

The quote i recieved was very competetive.....in fact...... was nearly £100 cheaper than the next quote.......but was far more comprehensive in the cover from the halifax as well.

Cover was instant and direct debit payments , were handled on time with no hassle......just renewed again with them..... still great value.

I would recomend people to phone them for a quote...its freephone,, so what can you lose

Thought I'd share....

Got a renewal quote from Halifax £866.66. Phoned Halifax as a new customer and got a quote for £620. What a saving!

£866 by heck what size house you got? I pay what you have saved per year for both buildings and contents!

I have been with Halifax for home contents insurance for 4 years. I pay £8.44 per month which includes full accidental damage-no one comes even close. I have never had to claim apart from when my freezer decided to defrost-I received a cheque for £200 within 5 days...well impressed.

If I were you I'd run your details through the Halifax site a few times, as I'm sure there are gremlins in their website. When I recently went to renew my Halifax buildings & contents insurance online, it gave me various different quotes at different times over a period of 2 or 3 days. There was a difference of about £300 in the highest & lowest quote & it took numerous attempts for it to give me the lowest of the quotes once again. Once it finally did, I quickly accepted it & paid, before it changed it's mind again.! I definitely saved money by taking my policy online rather than just renewing it in the conventional way.

I've had my buildings & contents insurance with the Halifax for years & have never found anyone to beat their price. With the insurance you also get the Key recovery service for free, and also free legals for a year.
