I decided to get a more competitive home insurance quote and after some research found that Norwich Union Direct (online) was nearly £300 cheaper than my existing policy with Lloyds!! It wasn't the cheapest policy available, but was the most recognisable insurer in the shortlist that I found on this site.
I had a few questions about house security that needed to be answered to ensure that the policy cover matched my old one and the woman that I spoke to at the call centre was courteous and knowledgeable. They advised that I should buy the policy through their website to get the best deal.
My policy documents came 2 days after I had signed up and I was able to chose qaurterly payments. The only downside to this was an admin charge which added about £20 to the policy total. It would be great if NU could waive this.
I have not had a claim so I may update this review if I feel differently, but at the time of writing I am really impressed by Norwich Union Direct.
I am writing this in a state of shock, not at how useless and slow this company is, (which is the usual scenario), but how fast, efficient and friendly they are.
I have had my buildings and contents insurance with NU Direct for the past couple of years. I shopped around a little and found them to be the cheapest for the level of cover I need.
I have had insurance claims in the past which all seem to run along the same lines, ie., report to police (if theft or loss), request a claim form, fill in with crime number, send off, wait arounds six weeks. Then you will recieve either a replacement or cash value of items claimed. Pretty straightforward, although 6 weeks is not to fast it's a reasonable amount of time to wait.
Enter NU Direct and a plonker of a husband who managed to lose his wallet containing £200.00 the other day.
After bashing him around the head a few times with a vacuum cleaner, he managed to scream out 'Can't we claim on the insurance?'. 'So we can' I thought, so after giving him a few more whacks for good measure I sent him off down the police station to report it.
Meanwhile I phoned the claimline, which luckily is an 0800 number, as I was on hold for over 30 minutes. 'Great', thinks I, another company that takes your money but not your calls.
When they finally answered I gave the girl my details and asked for a claim form. 'We can do that over the phone', she said. 'OK' I thought and gave her the details of the claim. Stupid husband was sent on a mission to pay money into bank. Idiot husband leaves wallet in Sainsburys on his way. Plonker husband then realises he has no wallet in bank, goes back to Sainsburys, no wallet. Foolish husband has lost my hard earned cash. (No, I still haven't forgiven him!)
Imagine my surprise when the next thing she says is, 'Well that seems to be in order, would you like us to pay the money straight into your account for you?'.
After picking myself up from the floor I told her this would be fine, I was then informed my money would be with me within 2 working days! What's even more amazing, it is, I have my money already!
Hats off to NU Direct, I have never in my life dealt with anything so smoothly, I will certainly be staying with this company forever! And with my husband, that's not a bad idea.
My garden fence was demolished in recent storms at a weekend. I rang Norwich Union Direct Home Insurance's emergency number and they could not tell me whether I would be covered - They could arrange an emergency fencer but at my cost. I rang them on the Monday morning and a claims logger took my name and said someone would call me back. This never happened (To be fair they were busy due to the storms)
When I called back the next day they had a phone number for me on their system which I had never heard of.
They told me that STORM DAMAGE TO FENCES IS SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDED FROM THEIR HOUSEHOLD POLICIES.
This confirms my experience of the insurance industry, that they are happy to take the money and then have exclusions for anything that is likely to happen. I changed to Norwich Union because of a bad experience with Direct Line. I am now going to be looking for another insurer again.
The lesson - Go through policies with a fine tooth comb!
The low review rating also reflects poor service I have received for other queries from their Indian call centre for car insurance. The only reason it is not the absolute bottom rating is that their UK staff are friendly and courteous when they give you the bad news.
Had renewal from Norwich Union Direct today for bulidings and contents insurance. Have been with them for few years but decided I would shop around this year. They quoted £407.12!
Went to Norwich Union Direct website (out of interest) and put in my details. Came back with quote for £256.00!!! Then used my husband's details rather than mine, came back at £224.99!!!!!
Can we apply on-line, even though we're an existing customer? I can't believe the price difference!!!
I've noticed this with NU as well. I got a quote from confused.com for car insurance and the best quote with NU direct was about £150 less than my renewal quote with NU direct. When I asked CS why, I was told that the cover was slightly different, i.e legal expenses and courtesy car and that it included a multiple policies discount as it recognised I was a customer. However even making it all the same new quote was still cheaper so they amended my renewal.
However I then did a new online quote with NU making sure everything was exactly the same as my renewal details and lo and behold it was cheaper still! Then remembered that NU Rescue meant that I did have multiple policies and spoke to CS again. This time there were no differences for them to argue against and my renewal was matched to the online quote price!
As to your question about accepting the online quote, I've been following posts on the uk cars newsgroup and someone has done exactly what you are suggesting. In fact he's done it for the last few years both with car and home insurance. So save your online quote, speak to CS and if they won't do anything accept your online quote.
Phoned Norwich Union - v. helpful. Agreed to match internet quote but explained differences between my existing policy and that I'd been quoted for. To keep existing policy (having increased excess to £100) still got it for £302.96 (£327.12 to pay monthly.)
Shall continue to shop around as have some time left before renewal.
Well done!
