I have always had trouble finding a decent home contents insurance company. Living in a council house, and in an area of deprivation, most insurance companies either refuse to quote or the premiums are prohibatively expensive.

Plymouth council have helped by starting an insurance scheme via Royal. Again this is very expensive, and the cover is poor.

When this insurance came up for renewal I phoned around. Direct line proved very helpful. They took time to explain the diferent types of cover.

I made a saving of 40% over the council backed scheme. The cover was better and when we moved this year they lowered the premium and sent us a rebate within seven days.

Today I dropped my laptop - down conrete steps - When they have sorted this out I will update my opinion.

But for now - highly recommended - put them at the top of your list

Did you know that if you move to Direct Line, they give you a first year discount to entice you in, take the discount away the next year bumping it up to an uncompetitive £200 more than a real insurance broker, and have no leeway to adjust the premium.......and then if you do go elsewhere but dont tell them, they automatically renew the insurance for you and bill your credit card.

Sharp practice or what?

For the third year running I have got the 10% discount for buying on line and the extra 20% (total 30% discount) for taking out a new Home insurance policy with Direct Line.

Your right, they do bump up your policy when you get your renewal so I just ring them up and get them cancel the policy on its renewal date and then buy a new policy on line at the discounted price, to start when the old one runs out.

I still find Direct Line quite competative at there discounted rates and the on line forms very easy to understand.

I hope this helps, frogger

Had my renewal from Direct Line come through for my home insurance and it was considerably higher than last year at £354. Shopped around and got it with Norwich Union for £295. Out of interest, put my details into Direct Line's website and was quoted £262!

I rang them up and the lady said that if you do it online you get 25% as a new customer and 10% for having a motor policy with them. She said it was only supposed to be for the first year but that the website can't distinguish. She said they advise people who ring up to apply online for a new policy.

Norwich Union policy now cancelled

I've done this too, both for Home and Car Insurance with Direct Line. I 'phoned to check it was ok to do it (ie cancel the current policy and take out a new one online) and was told that lots of people do! Apparently, if you phone a particular number they will match the online price so you don't have to cancel etc.

Had exactly the same situation for my father in laws home insurance with Direct Line. The renewal seemed a bit on the high side so got a few internet quotes then got an on-line quote from Direct Line which worked out cheeper as a new policy, so just did it on line to save the money. I also phoned them and they said it was OK to do this.
